Answer : Optical microscopes cannot image atoms because they are much smaller than the wavelength of the light that you are using. An image can be created using an instrument called a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). This uses an extremely fine charged tip which can detect tiny changes in electrical charge as it is scanned over a surface. An STM can be built to such precision that an individual atom can be detected. By applying a charge to the STM tip, individual atoms can be picked up and dropped.
