square root : In mathematics, a square root of a number x is a number r such that r 2 = x, or, in other words, a number r whose square (the result of multiplying the number by itself) is x. Every non-negative real number x has a unique non-negative square root, called the principal square root, which is denoted with a radical symbol as , or, using exponent notation, as x 1/2. For example, the principal square root of 9 is 3, denoted , because 3 2 = 3 × 3 = 9 and 3 is non-negative. The principal square root of a positive number, however, is only one of its two square roots. Every positive number x has two square roots. One of them is , which is positive, and the other , which is negative. Together, these two roots are denoted . Square roots of negative numbers can be discussed within the framework of complex numbers. More generally, square roots can be consi....   More from Wikipedia
square root : In mathematics, the root mean square (abbreviated RMS or rms), also known as the quadratic mean, is a statistical measure of the magnitude of a varying quantity. It is especially useful when variates are positive and negative, e.g., sinusoids. It can be calculated for a series of discrete..   More from Wikipedia

A 60 second run-down of simplifying square roots
This video shows a technique for calculating a square root by hand, without a calculator. It actually calculates each decimal place with perfect precision. The basis for why this process works is purely algebraic. When I figure this out for cube roots I will post a video on that as well.
Question : 2\/10 What does this mean? The thing in the middle is a square root sign. Does it mean the square root of 10 multiplied by 2?
Answer : Exactly. However, there's a similar notation for roots that you shouldn't get this confused with. When a number is written very small to the left of a root sign, it indicates what power of root it is (e.g., 3 indicates a cube root, 4 indicates a fourth root, and so in). This isn't used that often, because it's often easier to write it as an exponent, like 10^(1/3) or 10^(1/4)...   More from Yahoo Answers

Question : I don't know how to find the square root of the square root of fifty. Can anyone tell me the answer and the process involved? What is it in radical form? I don't know how to do that on my graphing or scientific calculators, and I can learn how later. All I need is the radical form so I can use it to find side x in my honors geometry homework. Someone must be able to help me please?
