This video is supplement to the 2 part alphabet videos to aid in pronounciation of long and mixed vowels. Also talks about vowel classifications. In Mongolian language, a word has either masculine or feminine vowels. They do not mix and only neutral vowel " " can be in words containing either masculine or feminine vowels.
Question : I am student teaching and trying to find a mini-lesson to teach that when two vowels are together the first one makes a long vowel sound and the second is silent. I have searched online and so far have been unable to find anything.

Answer : You mean such as in the words "make" "bake" and "fake"? This would be great to do with literacy stations. Create some words a and have "ake" and have them change the first letter to make new words, again such as "bake" and "cake" and "take" and "make". Or use other types that go along. Have the children put the scrambled words together. Another 3rd grade literacy activitiy is to have students look at comics in the paper and circle words they find that have the long vowel. Have them do this with a partner and explain how that word works. Make sure the paper is laminated so they can wipe off and the next group can go. PS. Students do this normally in 1st grade, are these IEP students or is this a 1-8-1 room? If you need a lesson in 10 mins or under, you're going to have to do a worksheet. Try to make it creative- perhaps have a picture and have them glue on letters like a picture of a "cake" and have them glue on C-A-K-E. Keep stressing that the A is long b/c of the 2nd vo.... Question : I was thinking if the word ended in a vowel, the the other vowel was always long, but that's not true for all words....

They only had to remember 5 sounds, and they built confidence that way. For long vowels, I use two mnemonics. One is "the silent e makes the vowel say its name." The other is "when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking." Of course, these are not perfect, and English is full of broken rules. But it works for kids, who are particularly rules-based. They want to know how it works so they can apply the same rules over and over again.
