the arithmetic mean : In mathematics and statistics, the arithmetic mean (or simply the mean) of a list of numbers is the sum of all of the list divided by the number of items in the list. If the list is a statistical population, then the mean of that population is called a population mean. If the list is a statistical sample, we call the resulting statistic a sample mean. The mean is the most commonly-used type of average and is often referred to simply as the average. The term "mean" or "arithmetic mean" is preferred in mathematics and statistics to distinguish it from other averages such as the median and the mode. If we denote a set of data by X = ( x 1, x 2, ..., x n), then the sample mean is typically denoted with a horizontal bar over the variable (\bar{x} \,, enunciated " x bar"). The Greek letter μ is used to denote the arithmetic mean of an entire population. Or, for a random variable that has a defined mean, μ is the probabilistic mean or expected..   More from Wikipedia

Question : Using data for three periods, construct a set of total returns that will produce a geometric mean equal to the arithmetic mean.

Answer : I think you have 2 different problems here. One is asking how they are related and the 2nd asking what set of values give an arthmetic mean = the geometric mean. Well they are related in that they are both mathematical statistics and I think I do know one set where they are equal. If the 3 observations each yield the same value then I believe the two means are equal 1+1+1= 3/3 =1 and 1*1*1=1**1/3 = 1. 3+3+3=9/3=3 and 3*3*3=27**1/3=3. If the 3 observations yield different values then it become much more difficult 1+2+3 = 6/3=2 1*2*3=6**1/3=1.817..   More from Yahoo Answers

Question : Sine the mid 1998, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has scored an arithmetic mean of 10,004.28, and a geometric mean of 9,961.46. Which mean best describes the "middle value" of the index? Explain Why is the geometric mean smaller than the arithmetic mean? Will this always be the case?

Answer : Most of the time the arithmetic mean is the better measure of central tendency. The exception is when the data differ by orders of magnitude, such as the set 20, 42, 123, 794, and 1673. The DJIA doesn't vary enough to justify using a geometric mean. Don't use statistics to choose stocks.
