Properties of gamma radiation
They are not deflected by electric and magnetic fields. They affect photographic plates. The ionising power is very low compared to alpha-particles and beta-particles. They are electromagnetic waves like X-rays and light rays. The wavelength of these rays ar..

Question : Why are gamma rays used in medical rather than the other particles? @ g3152
"Gamma radiation is extremely ionizing"
This is not true. Gamma radiation is a poor ionizer
Answer : alpha particles will get absorbed by the skin and destroy the skin with its large ionisation ability beta particles can work but they will be stopped and are a lot less effective and they can ionise which is a lot more dangerous for the patient because they can have their organs destroyed from the inside gamma has a large energy and can penetrate the skin, also it has no ionising effect so is less dangerous..   More from Yahoo Answers

Question : Not that I'm trying to get cancer any faster than I have to, but I got to wondering if gamma rays have any sort of positive effect. Or do they only cause genetic mutations? I was just thinking in the back of my mind that since scientists are trying to harness and find uses for neutrinos, I got to wondering if gamma rays could be used in some weird way, or if it's not currently viewed as practical.
Answer : They are used in some cancer therapies. They are used to detect atomic structures, which helps us build better semi-conductors and computers. They are used to detect cracks in metals: airplane inspections use them frequently. They are used to kill bacteria in some situations...   More from Yahoo Answers
