Question : Hi, I am calculating statistics ie, median, upper and lower quartiles from histogram data and have been given class intervals and frequencies. I know how to calculate the cumulative frequency but when it comes to the written working for calculating the upper and lower quartiles it's asking for required cumulative frequencies?? The equation is: Lower end (of interval) + Interval Width x (Required Cumulative Frequency - Cumulative frequency at start of interval, divided by frequency in ..

Answer : At the median the cumulative frequency should be 50% of the total (that is, the total frequency), at the lower quartile it should be 25% and at the upper quartile it should be 75%. I think this is what the formula means by 'Required Cumulative Frequency'. If you choose the interval which should contain those cumulative frequencies (say, for the lower quartile, one that ranges from 23% to 31%) then that formula should give you an estimate of the value for that cumulative frequency.

Question : I don't really understand..

Answer : heyy :) i'm not too sure about the following, but this is what i think they are. also i have backed up a few with a bit of extra research :) Simple frequency -- Im pretty sure thats just normal frequency. i.e. how much something occured in a set time. Relative Frequency -- Compares each class interval to the total number. e.g. if you asked 32 people how much TV they watch, and 8 people said 2 hours per day. The frequency would be 8, and the total number was 32. Therefore the relative frequency would be 8/32. Cumulative Frequency -- Is the addition of each frequency to the last. e.g. (using the example from above) the first class frequency is 8. If 10 people were in the next class frequency and said they watched 3 hours of tv per day, the cumulative frequency at that moment would be 18 (10+ 8). If 4 people watched 4 hours of tv, then the cumulative frequency would be 18+4, i.e. 22. {It sounds confusing but its not, you bascally just keep a running total of the frequencie..
