Why Metal Alloys Degrade And Fail - ScienceDaily (Oct. 2, 2008) — Metal alloys can fail unexpectedly in a wide range of applications---from jet engines to satellites to cell phones---and new research from the University of Michigan helps to explain why. See also: Matter & Energy Materials Science Civil Engineering Nanotechnology Chemistry Weapons Technology Physics Reference Materials science Metal Chemical compound Crystal structure Metal alloys are solids made from at least two different metallic elements. The elements are often mixed together as liquid, and when they 'freeze,' into solids, tiny grains of crystal form to create a polycrystalline material. A polycrystalline material is made of multiple crystals. Within each of the grains of crystal, atoms are arranged in a periodic pattern. This pattern isn't perfect, though. For example, some of the places atoms should be are empty. These empty spaces are called vacancies. Atoms of each element in the alloy take advantage of these holes in the lattice. In a process c....

Organic Carbon Compounds Emitted By Trees Affect Air Quality - ScienceDaily (Aug. 7, 2009) — A previously unrecognized player in the process by which gases produced by trees and other plants become aerosols—microscopically small particles in the atmosphere—has been discovered by a research team led by scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). See also: Plants & Animals Trees Nature Organic Earth & Climate Atmosphere Geochemistry Air Quality Reference Acid rain Automobile emissions control Atmospheric chemistry Nitrogen oxide Their research on the creation and effects of these chemicals, called epoxides, is being featured in the journal Science. Paul Wennberg, the R. Stanton Avery Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Environmental Science and Engineering and director of the Ronald and Maxine Linde Center for Global Environmental Science at Caltech, and John Seinfeld, the Louis E. Nohl Professor and professor of chemical engineering, have been studying the role of biogenic emissions—organic carbon compounds given off ....

why would a compound light microscope be a better choice than an electron microscope for studying living cell?   whole cell, could not have come into existence by chance. 1) Detailed studies of the cell were only possible after the discovery of the electron microscope. In Darwin's time, with the primitive microscopes seen here, it was only possible to view the outside surface of the cell. A living cell is a marvel of creation that astonishes scientists. When it's examined under an electron microscope, inside the cell can be seen a highly active structure, reminiscent of the activity in a beehive. ...
Science Grade 10 Biology Compound Microscope?   This is an old video from about 2 years ago. I found it in my files. We had a long term sub in my 10th grade biology class because the real teacher got fired because a student went to her house drunk and she didn't call his parents. Anyway... this sub was really weird. He talked like Borat and rambled. Here he is doing a what he called the Candle Stick. Features music by the Candy Spooky Theater. I picked 'Strip' because it'd sounded circus-like. PS. I'm putting this in the Science category. XD...

Question : I used to know this but now I cant find the answer anywhere! If I use a word/compound-word that has no literal meaning in a sentence, but is only meant to provoke a sensation or thought... what would that be called? An example: 'Pyrotechtronics or maybe ballet and ice cream' (meant to show the contrast of the sensations each thought provokes) I hope this makes sense. I dont really know how else to describe what I mean... probably why Im having trouble finding my answer lol yea... 'huh'... ..

Answer : I think that it is either imagery. Wait! No. Its..... Imagery! I take it you're a poet or something like that.

Question : I'm getting a microscope soon, and I'm wondering if I'll be able to collect cells from my body and watch mitosis. The magnifications are 16x, 40x, 400x and 1000x. If so, what cells would be best for doing this with? Thank you. Yes, it is a compound microscope. Alright, it only works on plants? I worried so. Alright. What else can I see with it then?

Answer : Your chances of seeing human chromosomes in the process of mitosis are extremely slim even with the 1000 total magnification lens. First of all, human chromosomes are so small, you can only see them if you're using a microscope with a high power lens like 1000x. However, you must have exceptional microscope skills to use the 1000x and you must use what is called an oil immersion preparation. In order to learn how to prepare an oil immersion preparation, you'll need to take a microbiology course. Even then, you'd need an incredible amount of patience to find and watch one cell in the process. That is why in regular high school biology classes students usually use prepared slides that are purchased from biological supply companies. The cells used have very large chromosomes. In addition, a chemical (methyl cellulose) is applied to the cells which kills the cell and also suspends the chromosomes in the stage of mitosis they were in when the methyl cellulose was applied. ..
