Question: A chemical laboratory has 500 ml of 50% acid solution. How much water should be added so that the strength of the solution is 30%?

Steps to derive

1 The volume of the solution multiplied by the percent of acid gives quantity of acid present in the solution.

2 Let x represent the quantity, in ml, of water to be added to the solution. Then 500 + x represents the volume of the solution in ml.

3 Quantity of acid in 50% solution = Quantity of acid in 30% solution

4 (500) (0.5) = (500 + x) (0.3)

5 250 = 150 + 0.3x

6 0.3 x = 100

7 x = 333.33

8 333.33 ml of water must be added to make the solution 30%.
