Question: A recent survey by a broadcasting company revealed that the number of viewers of different T.V channels in U.S.A are as recorded. Choose the appropriate box-and-whisker plot for the data and find the mean number of T.V viewers.
Number of viewers of different T.V channels in U.S
ChannelNumber of viewers (in millions)
Discovery20
HBO32
Fox Sports10
CNN14
Cartoon Network16

A ) Figure 1, 16 millions
B ) Figure 3, 10.5 millions
C ) Figure 2, 32.3 millions
D ) Figure 4, 18.4 millions

Steps to derive

1 The ascending order of the number of viewers in the data is 10, 14, 16, 20 and 32.

2 The least value in the above list is 10 and the greatest value is 32.

3 Middle quartile of the plot = Median of the given data = 16

4 Lower quartile = Median of lower half of the data = 10+142 = 242 = 12
 [Simplify.]

5 Upper quartile = Median of upper half of the data = 20+322 = 522 = 26
 [Simplify.]

6 So, Figure 4 is the appropriate box-and-whisker plot for the data.

7 Mean number of T.V viewers = Sum of the viewers of all channelsNumber of channels.

8 = 10+14+16+20+325 = 18.4 millions
 [Substitute and simplify.]

Hence the right answer is Option D
