Question: An assignment was given to six students to write as many words as they can starting with the letter H. The number of words written by each of them were given in the line plot. Find the difference between the number of words written by David and Catherine.

A ) 5
B ) 7
C ) 4
D ) 6

Steps to derive

1 The number of words written by each of the students is indicated by the number of cross marks over the name of the student, in the plot.

2 From the plot, the number of words written by David is 9 and that by Catherine is 4.
[Count the number of cross marks over each name.]

3 The difference between the number of words written by David and that by Catherine = 9 - 4 = 5
[Subtract the smaller number from the larger number.]

Hence the right answer is Option A
