Question: How many different ways can 3 men and 4 ladies sit in a row if the seating needs to be alternate?

A ) 144
B ) 7
C ) 35
D ) 63

Steps to derive

1 As there are 3 men and 4 ladies and the seating has to be alternate, the end seats necessarily have to be filled only by the ladies.

2 The seats 1, 3, 5 and 7 can be filled by the 4 ladies

3 The seats 2, 4 and 6 can be filled by the 3 men

4 The ladies can fill their seats in 4! ways.

5 The 3 men can fill their seats in 3! ways.

6 So, the total number of ways in which the seating arrangements can be made = 4! × 3! = 24 × 6 = 144.

Hence the right answer is Option A
