Question: The figure shows the picture of a drawing room along with the scale. Using the scales, estimate the actual length by which the drawing room is longer than kitchen.

A ) 6 feet
B ) 9 feet
C ) 3 feet
D ) 5 feet

Steps to derive

1 Let n and m be the actual lengths of the kitchen and the drawing room.

[Write the proportion using the scale.]
2 14.5 = 2n

 [Write the cross products.]
3 n × 1 = 4.5 × 2

 [Multiply.]
4 n = 9

5 The actual length of the kitchen is 9 feet.

[Write the proportion using the scale.]
6 14.5 = 4m

 [Write the cross products.]
7 m × 1 = 4.5 × 4

 [Multiply.]
8 m = 18

9 The actual length of the drawing room is 18 feet.

10 The actual length by which drawing room is longer than kitchen
 [Subtract.]
10 = 18 - 9 = 9 feet

11 So, the drawing room is 9 feet longer than kitchen.

Hence the right answer is Option B
