Question: There are 6 women and 5 men in a department. How many ways can a committee of 4 people be selected such that there are at least 2 women on the committee?

A ) 250
B ) 265
C ) 115
D ) 150

Steps to derive

1 Number of women = 6

2 Number of men = 5

3 We need to have atleast 2 women on the committee. That is (2 women , 2 men) or (3 women, 1 man) or all 4 women.

4 Selecting 2 women and 2 men from 6 women and 5 men = 6C2 × 5C2 = 150
 [6C2 = 15, 5C2 = 10]

5 Selecting 3 women and 1 man from 6 women and 5 men = 6C3 × 5C1 = 100
 [6C3 = 20, 5C1 = 5]

6 Selecting all 4 women and 0 men from 6 women and 5 men = 6C4 × 5C0 = 15
 [6C4 = 15, 5C0 = 1]

7 Number of ways a committee can be formed having atleast 2 women = 150 + 100 + 15 = 265

8 So, a committee of 4 people with atleast 2 women can be selected in 265 ways.

Hence the right answer is Option B
