Tissues are made up of a group of similar and specialized cells which works together to carry out a particular function. E.g. plant tissues- phloem, xylem, parenchyma, etc animal tissues-muscle, epidermis, etc. Some tissues are made up of only one type of cell and some are made up of several types of cells.
Two major types of plant tissues are meristematic tissues and permanent tissues. Permanent tissues of plants include simple tissues (parenchyma, collenchymas, and sclerenchyma) and complex tissues (xylem, phloem, and epidermis). Major types of animal tissues are connective tissue, muscle tissue, nervous tissue, and epithelial tissue.
Meristematic tissues: The cells of the meristematic tissues divide constantly and produce new cells. They occur in the regions of plant where continuous growth occurs. There are three types of meristematic tissues namely, apical meristem that is present in the tips of the roots and growing stems, lateral meristem which helps to increase the girth of the stem and root, and intercalary meristem which is located between the permanent tissues.
Permanent tissues: Simple permanent tissues of plants are made up of one type of cells which includes, parenchyma the most abundant tissue in plants that functions in assimilation and storage of foods, collenchymas that functions in providing mechanical support, elasticity, and tensile strength to the plant body, and sclerenchyma which is composed of dead cells and provides support to the plant.
Complex permanent tissues of plants contain different types of cells and include xylem, that functions in water transport and phloem which functions in food transport in plant.
Animal tissues mainly includes the following types
Epithelial tissues, it lines the surface of the skin, various cavities of the body, and covers the internal organs. Main function of epithelial tissues is protection and specialized cells of epithelial tissues secrete digestive juices and mucus.
Muscle tissue, helps in locomotion and movement of body and organs. Three types of muscles are present namely, smooth muscles, skeletal muscles, and cardiac muscles.
Connective tissue provides strength, support, and protection to the soft parts of the body.
Nerve tissue conducts nerve impulse.
