Characterization Definition

Characterization is the depiction or portrayal of persons (or other beings or creatures) where the writer discloses the personality of a character in narrative and dramatic works of art. Characterization is used bit-by-bit in literature to highlight and clarify the details about a character in a story. Characterization creates and describes characters in literature, it is a way a character acts, thinks, and speaks. 

An author can use the below two approaches to carry information about a character and frame an image of it:
  • Direct or explicit characterization - tells the listeners what the personality of the character is.
  • Indirect or implicit characterization - represents things (Speech, ¬†Actions, Thoughts, Effect on others, Looks) that reveal the personality of a character.
