Allusion Definition

Allusion is defined as a concise unintended inference to an idea, person, thing or place of cultural, historical, political or literary significance. It is something that is said or written that intends to make a person think. However no person or thing is described in detail to which it refers, instead is an indirect passing comment or reference wherein the writer assumes the reader may spot the allusion and grasp its importance.

For instance, in the sentence “Don’t act like a Romeo in front of her.” you make a literary allusion the minute you say, “Romeo” –  it is a reference to Shakespeare’s Romeo, a passionate lover of Juliet, in “Romeo and Juliet”.
