Isotope Definition

Different kinds of atoms of the same element which have the same atomic number but different mass numbers or atomic masses are called isotopes of that element.

For example, the isotope of chlorine of mass number 35 will have 17 protons and 18 neutrons in the nucleus and isotope of chlorine of mass number 37 will contain 17 protons and 20 neutrons in the nucleus. In general most of the elements have naturally occurring isotopes.
