Binary Arithmetic

Binary arithmetic is an important part of digital system. It can be performed using signed or unsigned binary numbers. Binary arithmetic is done exactly like  decimal numbers arithmetic, except in binary we have only two digits (0 and 1). There are different rules for binary addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. Below are number facts used during binary arithmetic :

Binary Addition Rules
0 + 1 = 1
0 + 0 = 0
1 + 0 = 1
1 + 1 = 0 (carry 1)

Binary Subtraction Rules
1 - 0 = 1   
0 - 0 = 0
1 - 1 = 0
 0 - 1 = 1 (Borrow 1)

Binary Multiplication Rules
0 x 1 = 0
0 x 0 = 0
1 x 0 = 0
1 x 1 = 1 (No borrow or carry)

Below are some examples on binary arithmetic:

Example 1: Add 011010 and 001100

Solution: 011010 + 001100

 

Example 2: Solve 11101 - 01010

Solution: 11101 - 01010
