Displacement Time Graph

Lets take a man covering certain path for a particular time. For each interval his rate of displacement might be uniform or non uniform. To get the idea at what rate the person undergoes displacement as a whole is decided by the displacement time graph.

A graph is plotted between the displacement of a body and the time taken by the body to cover such displacement is what we call displacement time graph. Here we take time on x-axis and displacement on y-axis.

Displacement vs Time Graph

There are several types of displacement time graphs. Every displacement time graph represents the nature of motion of the body.

For a stationary body, the displacement time graph is a straight line parallel to the time axis. The slope of the line is zero that indicates the velocity of the body is zero.

For a body moving with constant velocity, the displacement time graph is a straight line inclined at any angle from the time axis. If the slope is more that means the velocity of the body is more and if the slope is less it indicated the velocity of the body is less because the body moving with constant velocity says that the acceleration of the body is zero.

For a body moving with non-uniform velocity means that the displacement of the body covers in equal of interval of time is increasing, then the displacement time graph is a curved line tells that the velocity is increasing.

If we draw the tangent at several points on the graph, we observe that as the time increases the slope of the tangent also increases. Increasing slope shows that the velocity is not uniform and the motion is accelerated.

For a body moving with non-uniform velocity means that the displacement of the body covers in equal of interval of time is decreasing, then the displacement time graph is a curved line tells that the velocity is decreasing.

If we draw the tangent at several points on the graph we could see that as the time increases the slope of the tangent decreases. Decreasing slope shows that the velocity is not uniform and the motion is retarded.
